[Guardian / Edward Helmore] Mass shootings can be defined as incidents in which at least four people are shot, not including the shooter. At least nine people were killed, and more than 60 injured, in shootings between Saturday morning and Monday evening. [NBC News / Chantal Da Silva] Beyond mass shootings, there were more than 300 shootings in the US in the past three days — more than 130 people were killed. Nearly 18,000 have been shot dead this year; guns are now the leading cause of death for US children and teens. [BuzzFeed News / David Mack] Among the victims: Six teens, ages 13-15, were wounded in Chattanooga, Tennessee; one person killed and seven more injured at a Memorial Day festival in Taft, Oklahoma; two killed and two more hurt at a house party in Port Richmond, Pennsylvania. [Washington Post / Annabelle Timsit] House Democrats are planning a vote on sweeping gun control legislation next week. If passed, the bills will face Republican opposition in the Senate. [Punchbowl News] Canada moves to ban handgun sales On Monday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced legislation banning the sale, import, and transfer of handguns. [Toronto Star / Stephanie Levitz] The bill also includes a "red flag" law requiring people who are a danger to themselves or others to hand over their guns. The government would be able to revoke licenses of people who commit domestic violence or criminal harassment. [Associated Press / Rob Gillies] Unlike in the US, gun ownership is not considered a constitutional right in Canada. [The Hill / Zach Schonfeld] In 2020, Canada banned 1,500 assault weapons after the country's deadliest mass shooting left 22 dead. A buyback program for those firearms will begin this year.
